2020 Summer Squad Announcement
Through the 2019 World Rowing Championships, New Zealand qualified nine boats for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (scheduled to be held 23 July - 8 August 2021), including four current world champion boats; the women’s eight, women’s pair, women’s double and women’s lightweight double. New Zealand’s women’s single, women’s quad, men’s single, men’s pair and men’s double are also qualified for Tokyo, while the men’s eight and men’s quad trained throughout the 2019/20 Summer Squad period to contest the (cancelled) 2020 Final Olympic Qualification regatta.
On 24 June World Rowing (FISA) announced a revised 2021 international regatta season. Rowing NZ’s focus remains firmly on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and we will continue to monitor COVID-19’s global impact ahead of finalising any international travel throughout 2021. Rowing NZ will also remain in close contact with both the New Zealand Olympic Committee and FISA.
James Lassche has announced his retirement from professional rowing. He represented New Zealand for the first time in 2006 as a member of the Youth Cup team (now U21 Trans-Tasman) and in 2007 was selected in the junior men’s eight who won silver at the World Rowing Junior Championships. James continued to represent New Zealand in age group teams and was later selected into New Zealand’s elite rowing team in 2009, and has competed internationally as both heavyweight and lightweight. His career highlights include silver in the lightweight men's pair at the 2010 World Rowing Championships, silver in the lightweight men’s four at the 2013 World Rowing Championships, and 5th at the Rio Olympic Games in the same event.
The 2020 Summer Squad will assemble at Lake Karapiro on Monday 13 July.
