In Memoriam – George Paterson

  • 28 Jul 20

Rowing NZ regrets to advise the sad passing of George Paterson on 26 July.

George was the bow seat of the famed Oamaru men’s coxed four, who at the 1962 Perth Empire Games won gold, defeating Australia by just one foot. George went on to compete at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964 as seven seat in the men’s eight, and was also reserve for the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.

In 1997 George coached the U23 four at the Australasian test regatta in Sydney, Australia.

In 2018 the New Zealand Rowing Foundation awarded George with a Legacy Medal in celebration of his contribution to the history of New Zealand rowing.

Rowing NZ’s condolences and thoughts are with George’s family and his many friends.

George’s funeral will be held at 2pm Monday 3 August at Lamb and Hayward, 467 Wairakei Road, Burnside, Christchurch.
