Rowing NZ National Athlete Pathway

  • 23 Apr 21

Rowing NZ is reshaping the high performance athlete development pathway to ensure we are using evidence to best support athlete needs throughout their career. Our research found we need to support more athletes earlier on in our pathway, while affording athletes greater patience and flexibility for each stage of development. The National Pathway is the first step on the high performance pathway and will support identified athletes across the country before they reach the standards required to gain selection into the centralised high performance system. You can find out more in the National Pathway Information brochure below.

Speaking of the reshaping of Rowing NZ's national pathway, world champion in the women's pair Kerri Gowler commented, "I am very thankful to have had the ability to study alongside being an elite athlete, and I believe rowing's new structure is an exciting development which will allow more athletes to pursue an education while still having the opportunity to pursue high performance sport.''

World champion in the women's eight, Lucy Spoors highlighted the various pathways many athletes have taken prior to selection into the elite team. ''Happy rowers are fast rowers, and Rowing NZ's new pathway ensures that our sport's younger athletes can obtain a healthy balance between self development and pursuing high performance sport. Many athletes in the New Zealand rowing team have taken different journeys ahead of elite selection, and our new pathway will allow athletes the opportunity to tailor their own journey towards the top.''
