Rowing NZ International Travel – COVID-19

  • 07 Dec 20

Rowing NZ, having considered government advice, athlete, coach and staff feedback, financial and risk impacts including personal liability relating to the HSWA, the personal health and wellbeing of our people, logistical challenges and above all else, our medical team advice, alongside performance preparations for the Tokyo Olympics, confirm the following decision regarding international travel throughout 2021:

Excluding the travel required to Tokyo for the Olympic Games, Rowing NZ will not authorise, pay for, or support in any form, international travel for any athlete, coach or support staff, or any personnel related to or working with Rowing NZ athletes and/or coaches for international travel in 2021, subject to:

  • A monthly review of all relevant information and that information being reviewed in the context of the above considerations
  • That information being passed to the Rowing NZ Board for further consideration and a final decision

Performance at the Tokyo Olympic Games, hosted July 2021, is the end point for elite athletes for this current cycle and is the pinnacle event for commitments being made by all HP personnel. For that reason, a monthly review of the best performance preparation options will be made by Rowing NZ in consultation with all relevant stakeholders through Q1 and Q2 in 2021. It is acknowledged that taking a position such as this, is made with the information that we have today and Rowing NZ remain open to considering any and all changes as the year proceeds.

Rowing NZ’s U19, U21, U23 and Elite World Rowing Championships campaigns will be considered alongside all of the above information and will follow the same process and communications. It is the intention of Rowing NZ to select and support age group squads irrespective of international travel.

The elite men’s eight and quad need to travel to, and compete at, the 2021 FISA Final Olympic Qualification Regatta, hosted 16 – 18 May, Lucerne, Switzerland. Rowing NZ’s planning is being completed upon this basis.
