2020 New Zealand Masters Championships – Cancelled

In lieu of the New Zealand Government’s COVID-19 update yesterday (24 August), Rowing NZ and Karapiro Rowing have evaluated all possible risk to those involved in upcoming events, as well as the possible risks posed to the wider community, and regret to announce that the 2020 New Zealand Masters Championships scheduled to be held at 19-20 September at Lake Karapiro has been cancelled.

This decision has been based upon crucial event factors such as New Zealand’s current Level 2 status, the high number of Karapiro Rowing staff and volunteers required to facilitate the event, the high number of athletes expected to compete and the significant amount of regional and inter-island travel required by all those wishing to attend the event in various capacities.

Rowing NZ and Karapiro Rowing understand this announcement will be sadly received by the Masters rowing community, but remain supportive of the Government’s COVID-19 containment initiatives, and understand their intent is to avoid non-essential gatherings that will increase the community risk for the spread of COVID-19.

Rowing NZ strongly encourage all those wishing to compete at the 2020 New Zealand Masters Championships to consider the 2020 World Rowing Virtual Masters Regatta, held 2-6 September.

World Rowing Masters Regatta – Virtual

The World Rowing Masters Regatta has also been cancelled. In this predominantly virtual international season, however, an alternative regatta will take place.

Initiated by the FISA Masters Commission, the 2020 World Rowing Virtual Masters Regatta will take place at the same time as the original regatta, from 2-6 September 2020 with masters rowing unity and participation the key. Designed to be done anywhere in the world masters rowers are invited to complete a 1000m piece on any kind of indoor rowing machine.

So whether you are in lockdown, back rowing at your club, working out on a borrowed water-rower or old Concept2 at your fitness centre, join in. It’s all about just taking part and uniting with the many masters rowers throughout the world – just like you would have if the 2020 master regatta had taken place.

Keep your record of never having missed a World Rowing Masters Regatta in the last ten years, retain your count of 16 masters regattas, connect with fellow rowers and do the 1000m just as if you were racing on the water.

From 2-6 September jump on an indoor rower and submit your score to the online form here.

2020 Masters Stretching Seminar - No change

Rowing NZ will still host a virtual Masters stretching seminar with recently retired elite rower Sophie Mackenzie, a qualified personal trainer, yoga teacher and holistic nutritionist.

Join us at 7pm on Wednesday 26 August here.
