Secondary School Rowing Update

  • 30 Jun 20

Despite the impact of COVID-19 on rowing regattas throughout 2020, 2021 regatta dates and venues for secondary school rowing in New Zealand will remain as previously confirmed. 2021 regatta dates and venues for New Zealand secondary school rowing were confirmed in 2019.

2022 regatta and venues for all major New Zealand school regattas have not been officially approved due to the cancellation of the 2020 New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Association (NZSSRA) AGM scheduled to be held during the 2020 Aon Maadi Cup. The below proposed dates align with the Summer School Tournament Week and have been proposed for approval. Whilst currently officially unapproved, Rowing NZ is confident this approval will be reached and therefore wish to share them now to assist with secondary school planning for future seasons.

  • Aon North Island Secondary Schools 5 - 7 March, Lake Karapiro, Cambridge

  • Aon North Island Secondary Schools 11 - 13 March, Lake Karapiro, Cambridge

Flight bookings affected by COVID-19

Rowing NZ acknowledge many schools and clubs had their travel arrangements affected by the cancellation of rowing regattas, and that many initially faced difficulties transferring credit to future scheduled regattas. Rowing NZ sought assistance from Sport NZ and School Sport NZ and advocated for an extension to the time frames of credit and use of flight to enable schools to recover some of their bookings for future regattas. We remain pleased that shortly after, Air New Zealand did increase their credit validity period for COVID-19 affected flights.
