2020 Rocket Foods New Zealand Rowing Championships - Lake Access

  • 28 Jan 20

Ahead of the Rocket Foods New Zealand Rowing Championships, Lake Karapiro's 2km course will not be available for rowers for the duration of the NZCT New Zealand Canoe Sprint Championships held 14-16 February.

All schools and clubs should prepare for limited or no access to their regular Lake Karapiro launching and training areas ahead of the Rocket Foods New Zealand Rowing Championships held 18-22 February.

As a sport we are privileged to have access to Lake Karapiro for training and competition, and acknowledge the location and stretch of water is popular among other sports for their own events.

Availability of the course on Monday 17 February is dependent on the removal of the NZCT New Zealand Canoe Sprint Championships course and laying of the 2km course, which is planned to take place on Sunday 16 February at the conclusion of racing.

Access to the 2km course on Monday 17 February (from the Mighty River Domain boat park) will be determined on Sunday 16 February and communicated by 7.30pm on the same day. Notification of this decision will be made via email to all registered coaches for the Rocket Foods New Zealand Rowing Championships and via the Rowing NZ App.

The boat park will be available for boats to be unloaded from noon on Saturday.

Alternative training areas for clubs to consider using throughout this limited access period are as follows:

1. Horahora Domain – 15 minute drive from Mighty River Domain providing access to the upper end of Lake Karapiro. Training downstream towards the 2km course would be most suitable for rowers as the area upstream has ski lanes.

2. Keeley’s Landing – 10 minute drive from Mighty River Domain, also providing access to upper end of Lake Karapiro. Training upstream towards Horahora Bridge would be most suitable for rowers, noting that beyond the bridge are ski lanes best avoided.

3. Waikato River – 25 minute drive from Mighty River Domain. Please contact Hamilton Rowing Club or Waikato Rowing Club in advance to confirm availability of launching areas.
