Karapiro kicks off 2015 with Cambridge Town Cup regatta
With just three weeks until the Bankstream New Zealand Rowing Championships and two months to go until the 2015 Aon Maadi Cup the 2015 Cambridge Town Cup regatta will provide some scintillating racing at both club and school levels for North Island rowers.
The regatta on this this weekend (23-25 January) at Lake Karapiro is a two and a half day regatta and racing will commence on Friday with heats for age group races only. Saturday heats races will begin Club rowers and the remaining age group races on the programme. Sunday racing consists of finals for all events. The weather outlook is excellent with predictions of fine conditions with light winds, while temperatures are expected to reach 29 degrees over the weekend.
Over the weekend 81 events will be contested by 1969 crews, with 367 races being run over the duration of the event with 2288 athletes competing. Rowers are representing 43 clubs and schools, three Regional Performance Centres (RPCs), the New Zealand Summer Squad and two international clubs with competitors coming from Sydney, Australia and the United States.
Big names from the New Zealand Summer Squad will pick up the sculls and are expected to go head to head in the men’s premier single. 2012 Olympic champions Eric Murray, Hamish Bond and Mahe Drysdale will face top talent from amongst the squad including Robbie Manson, who won the event by over seven seconds at the Karapiro Christmas Regatta over a month ago. Top quality racing will be had with 34 scullers entered into this event from Auckland and Waikato RPCs and the New Zealand Summer Squad.
Fiona Bourke will hope to take a win again in the women’s premier single scull after taking out the honours at the Karapiro Christmas Regatta, however her partner from the current World Champion Women’s Double, Zoe Stevenson, will challenge her as will the remainder of the women’s sculling group. There is a total field of 26 scullers contesting this event.
In the women’s premier pairs there are four summer squad entries including summer squad newcomers Ruby Tew and Holly Greenslade who recently joined the squad from Central RPC, the remainder of the pairs include the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Rebecca Scown, World Championship Gold medalists Kayla Pratt, Kelsey Bevan, Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler. They will also have a taste of international competition with USA athletes Sara Hendershot and Taylor Ritzel contesting the event.
In the men’s sweep-oar events, the New Zealand Summer Squad heavyweight men will be targeting the men’s premier eight. There are also three summer squad entries in the men’s premier pair.
The men’s premier double will also see the sculling squad mixing up combinations with Robbie Manson teaming with John Storey, Chris Harris with Jade Uru, and George Bridegwater with Karl Manson, while a lightweight crew of Adam Ling and Logan Rodger make up the final summer squad entries.
The Bankstream New Zealand Rowing Championships will be held at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel in the South Island from 17-21 February, while the Aon Maadi Cup (New Zealand secondary school rowing championships) is being held at Lake Karapiro from 23-28 March.
