New Zealand wins Rusty Robertson Trophy
New Zealand’s U21 team have won the 2019 Trans-Tasman Regatta and were awarded the Rusty Robertson Trophy after three days of racing on Lake Karapiro.
Today’s racing concludes the event with 288 overall points awarded to New Zealand and 270 awarded to Australia, and marks the first time New Zealand have won the Rusty Robertson Trophy since 2015.
New Zealand’s team won the first leg of the series in Penrith, Australia earlier this year with 155 points to Australia’s 125. Despite Australia’s strong performance across the last three days and winning the second leg with 145 points to New Zealand’s 133, Australia were unable to retain the Rusty Robertson Trophy.
The second leg of the U21 Trans-Tasman regatta began Thursday 22 August with 2018 trophy winners Australia returning to New Zealand alongside Canada. Canada, despite being eligible to win medals, are ineligible for points towards the Rusty Robertson Trophy.
During their visit to New Zealand, Rowing Australia and Rowing Canada teams were able to spend time with current and former New Zealand elite athletes including Eric Murray, Sophie Mackenzie and Kelsi Parker.
