  • 13 Aug 18

New Zealand's University Team departed for Shanghai, China on 6 August to contest the 2018 World University Rowing Championships 10-12 August.

The World University Rowing Championships are held every second year. 2018 is the first year the regatta is being held outside of Europe, and this year sees a small change in the boat classes as World Rowing has moved to gender equality for all championship events.

The event was held at the Shanghai Water Sports Centre, located in the Qingpu District. This high performance centre was used for the 2012 Olympic Games qualifier and every year for national events.

New Zealand entered two crews, each taking home medals from A Finals.

Men’s Lightweight Single Scull

Harrison Sommerville of Massey University won gold in a time of 7:02.87, almost three seconds clear of Germany in second, and Italy in third.

Women’s Double Sculls

Amy Mills and Georgia Allen, also of Massey University won bronze in a time of 7:09.58. Mills and Allen were 0.2 seconds ahead of Italy who settled for fourth, with China and Canada first and second respectively.
