Qualifying crews head to Europe
Rowing New Zealand crews to compete at the Olympic Qualification Regatta departed New Zealand on Monday morning.
The five crews, including 2014 World Champion single sculler Emma Twigg will head to Lucerne, Switzerland, for a last-chance regatta to secure a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The four other boats also vying for Olympic qualification are the men’s and women’s quadruple sculls, men’s coxless four and the men’s lightweight double scull.
The final Olympic Qualification regatta will take place in Lucerne from 22 – 24 May, ahead of the second world cup from 22 – 29 May where the qualification crews will be joined by the rest of the New Zealand Elite Rowing Team.
With five boats set to compete in Lucerne qualification regatta the New Zealand Olympic Rowing team has the potential to become even larger with up to 14 boats. At the London Olympic Games New Zealand fielded a rowing team of 26 athletes across eleven boat classes.
Other crews also departing New Zealand for Europe today include the men's lightweight four, men's double and women's lightweight double.
The remaining New Zealand Elite Rowing Team will depart New Zealand on 20 May.
