U18 eights book last finals berths
The 2016 Aon Maadi Cup (New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Championships) regatta continued today at Lake Ruataniwha with repechages and quarter-finals and with the last remaining places in the prestigious girls and boys under-18 eights finals decided.
In the girls under-18 eight repechages St Peter's School and St Kentigern College made it through to the final of the premier girl’s event, the prestigious Levin Jubilee Cup. St Peter’s charged ahead in the first repechage to win in 6:56.36, eight seconds ahead of Columba College who finished in second place. In the second repechage St Kentigern College just managed to hold off Baradene College to win by a second to claim the last remaining sport in the A final. St Peters School and St Kentigern crews will join Diocesan School for Girls (Auckland), St Margaret’s, Sacred Heart Girls College (Hamilton),Rangi Ruru Girls School, Christchurch Girls High School and Epsom Girls Grammar School in the race for medals on Saturday afternoon.
In the boys under-18 eight repechages St Andrews College and Wanganui Collegiate School secured the last remaining spots to qualify for the final of New Zealand Rowing’s most famous trophy – the Maadi Cup. In the first repechage of the boys under-18 eights St Andrews College held their position over second placed Sacred Heart College (Auckland) to win by 2 seconds in 6:06.26 and qualify for the Maadi Cup final. While Wanganui Collegiate booked their place in the final with a solid row beating out St Bede’s College by 2 seconds to win in 6:11.18. The line up in the A final on Saturday will be Auckland Grammar, Hamilton Boys High School crews, Christchurch Boys, St Kentigern College, Christs College, Westlake Boys, St Andrews College and Wanganui Collegiate School.
The six day regatta began on Monday 4 April and concludes on Saturday 9 April. The regatta participants contest four age group classes U15, U16, U17 and U18 and a variety of boat classes including singles, pairs, doubles, fours, quads, eights and octuples. There are more than 2200 rowers representing 120 schools at this year’s Aon Maadi Cup regatta.
The 2016 Aon Maadi Cup semi-finals and C and D finals will be contested tomorrow (Thursday 7 April), with 52 A finals divided over Friday and Saturday.
