2016 Aon Maadi Cup countdown
In less than a weeks’ time Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel will be a hive of activity when the 2016 Aon Maadi Cup (New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Championships) kicks off. The Aon Maadi Cup is the largest secondary schools sports event in New Zealand and one of the largest regattas in the Southern Hemisphere. The regatta begins on Monday 4 April and runs for six days, with the event concluding on Saturday 9 April.
The number of competitors entered is 2145 plus 108 reserves making a total of 2253 athletes attending the 2016 edition of the Aon Maadi Cup. There will be 120 secondary schools from across New Zealand lining up at the regatta and a total of 1495 crews are entered across the 52 events on offer at the regatta. The largest entries can be found in the Girls U16 Double Scull with 63 crews competing while the Boys U17 Single Scull also boasts a large field of 60 athletes contesting the event.
The rowers will take part in four age group categories U15, U16, U17 and U18 and in a range of boat classes including singles, pairs, doubles, fours, quads, eights and octuples.
The Maadi Cup is the prize for the premier event, the Boys' Under 18 Eight but ’Maadi Cup’ has also become the colloquial name given to the Rowing Regatta.
Other top prizes at the regatta are the Levin Jubilee Cup for the Girls Under-18 eight, the Springbok Shield which will be awarded to the Boys Under-18 Coxed Four and the Dawn Cup for the Girls Under-18 Four.
