Secondary School Champs’ highlights

Over 1900 athletes competed for medals at the North and South Island Secondary School Championships over the weekend. It was the last chance for crews to test themselves ahead of the 2016 Aon Maadi Cup which will be held at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel from 4 to 9 April.

The banks were lined with tents and supporters at this weekend’s 2016 Aon North Island Secondary School Championships, which saw 1859 athletes representing 92 schools competing in the three day regatta at Lake Karapiro.

In the girls U18 eight at the Aon North Island Championships it was Auckland Diocesan who made their mark, winning the final over Sacred Heart Hamilton and St Peter’s School in a time of 6:44.65.

In the boys U18 eight Hamilton Boys High School asserted their dominance, winning in a time of 5:56.81 over Westlake Boys and St Kentigern College.

St Peters School were the worthy winners in the girls U15 coxed quadruple scull, the regatta’s largest field, crossing the line 5 seconds ahead of Glendowie College.

In Twizel 1111 athletes representing 46 schools competed at the Meridian South Island Secondary School Rowing Championships over the weekend.

Christ’s College were the clear winners in the boys U18 eight while St Margaret’s College showed their form winning the girls U18 eight.

Veronica Wall from Ashburton College impressed at Lake Ruataniwha winning the U16, U17 and U18 girls single as well as the girls U18 coxed quad.

With strong fields in both regattas, the standard of competition will be high at the 2016 Aon Maadi Cup (New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Championships) to be held at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel in two weeks time between 4 - 9 April.
