Rowing New Zealand success seals funding bonus

Rowing New Zealand has received increased investment from High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ) ahead of the 2016 season, which culminates with the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

The extra investment caps off another exceptional year with nine New Zealand Rowing crews standing on the podium at the 2015 World Rowing Championships and seven of those medals being won in Olympic events. Rowing New Zealand has qualified nine boats and a total of 33 athletes for the Rio Olympic Games with the chance to qualify further boats at the Olympic qualifying regatta in May 2016.

Rowing New Zealand Chief Executive Simon Peterson said “Rowing New Zealand is pleased to receive additional support towards the Rio campaign and is encouraged that the depth and strength of our rowing programme is being acknowledged by HPSNZ through this additional support.”

“After such a successful year we must also take the opportunity to recognise and congratulate all our athletes, coaches and support staff who have contributed to these results and will be part of our promising future in Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and beyond.”

Rowing New Zealand’s high performance programme is to receive an additional $100,000 on top of the $5.2M already committed to their campaign.

HPSNZ will also provide further investment in the form of Performance Enhancement Grants (PEGs), Prime Minister’s Scholarships, HPSNZ Athlete Performance Support, and innovation and technology.
