Joe and Nathan take Gold
Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan delivered the perfect race today to claim Olympic Gold - the first for New Zealand at the 2012 London Games - after a fairy tale race.
The duo made a great start to keep themselves in the pack for most of the race - a key element to winning - and when they turned on the afterburners and executed their trademark final 500 metre push, the Slovenians, the Italians and the rest of the field behind them simply had no answer. Gold was theirs and the World and Olympic Champions are now the undisputed kings of the heavyweight double scull.
Elsewhere, Storm Uru and Pete Taylor coped well with the tricky conditions that prevailed in lanes 1, 2 and 3 throughout the day and qualified for the main final via second place in the semi-final. Emma Twigg also lines up in the final after a third place in her semi.
The women's lightweight double scull of Louise Ayling and Julia Edward could only finish fifth and will race in the B Final, whilst the men's four are also destined for a B Final appearance after finishing fourth in their semi.
