Samuel (Sam) Jones started rowing in 2013 at Westlake Boys’ High School and North Shore Rowing Club.
He was selected in the North Island U18 team in 2016 and the following year represented New Zealand for the first time in the junior men’s pair. He and his partner were placed 5th at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Trakai, Lithuania. He then joined Auckland RPC for the 2017/18 summer season and impressed the New Zealand selectors once again by winning three golds and a bronze at the Rocket Foods New Zealand Rowing Championships. This earned Sam an U23 trial and he was selected in the U23 men’s coxed four for 2018. The crew put in an impressive performance and won a silver medal at the World Rowing U23 Championships in Poznan, Poland. Sam has since spent the domestic season with the New Zealand summer squad and will compete at the 2019 World Rowing U23 Championships in the men’s coxless four.
He has an identical twin brother, and his sisters are also identical twins.
