New Zealand Rowing Technique and How To Coach It - Duncan Holland

The NZ Rowing Technique presentation starts with a description of how to row. This is based on the widely accepted NZ technique that has been used by almost all our leading rowers over the last fifty years and is still the basis of high-performance rowing here today. This technique model is built on the ideas of the great coaches of the past and is approved by the current Rowing NZ elite coaches.

The model is a straightforward set of sketches of the stroke and descriptions of what the athlete should be doing at various points in the stroke. From here the next step is addressed, how to coach this model of rowing.

Duncan’s presentation goes to the heart of technique coaching – When you see a rower doing things differently to how you want them to, what do you do?

A process that can be used by all coaches, at any level, is offered. How to look at a crew and analyse their current technique, how to decide what changes to make, and how to achieve those changes, are discussed.

Coaches are given opportunities to experience the process themselves – photos and videos of crews are shown, and participants work through the stages trying it for themselves.
