Like many clubs and organisations, the COVID pandemic has had a major impact for Hamilton Rowing Club.
Whilst New Zealand is very fortunate and has minimized much of the pain and anguish experienced other countries, the COVID lockdown for New Zealand occurred at the time when we were scheduled to run our major annual club fundraiser. A fundraiser that is significant for the club in that it allows to keep our fees as low as possible, whilst still having access to quality equipment. The lockdown has forced us to think of alternative ways of Fundraising, and this is it â The Hamilton Rowing Club Waikato AWA challenge.
What is the Waikato Awa Challenge? It is an opportunity to use an Indoor Rower to virtually race & explore the 336 km of the Waikato Awa, (river), the longest river in New Zealand, running for 425 kilometers (264 mi) through the North Island of New Zealand. It rises in the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, joining the Tongariro River system and flowing through Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake. It then drains Taupo at the lake's north eastern edge, creates the Huka Falls, and flows northwest through the Waikato plains. It empties into the Tasman sea south of Auckland at Port Waikato.
