The Rio Olympic Games was Kayla’s first Olympic Games. Kayla was part of the silver medal winning eight that qualified the boat for Rio at the 2015 World Rowing Championships, the first women's eight to qualify for the Olympics in New Zealand rowing history.

Kayla was born in Auckland and represents the Auckland Rowing Club where she started rowing with Epsom Rowing Club in 2006. Kayla rowed in the pair with Rebecca Scown in 2013 winning bronze at the World Championships. She was also part of the New Zealand women’s four that won gold and set a world best time at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.

Kayla got her first call up to the New Zealand elite team she teamed up with Rebecca Scown in the women's pair for the 2013 World Rowing Championships where they won bronze.

Kayla also had success in the pair's events as the U-23 level when she and Kelsey Bevan won gold at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Lithuania in 2012.

In 2014 Kayla Pratt represented New Zealand in the women's coxless four along with Kelsey Bevan, Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler. The four went onto win gold and smashed the world best time for the event, claiming the record in 6:14.36.
